Elling Eielsen Biography
Elling Eielsen (1804-1883) was the first Norwegian American Lutheran pastor in the United States. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1839 and was ordained in 1843. In the same year as his ordination he formed the Eielsen Synod, a "radically Haugean" church that later renamed itself the Hauge Synod and lay in opposition to the Norwegian Synod ("The Norwegian Immigrant and His Church," 1966).
