In this series of interviews by Odd Lovoll for his books “The Promise of America: History of the Norwegian-American People” and “The Promise Fulfilled: A Portrait of Norwegian Americans Today,” Terje Joranger interviews Edna Bergsgaard of Spring Grove, Minnesota. Edna tells about her early childhood and family life and history, as well as her relationship to the Norwegian language. She narrates her marriage and details some stories from her early married life, and tells about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She talks about the Sons of Norway Syttende Mai celebrations in detail and gives a brief account of her feelings on politics, as well as her impressions of religion as a child. They finish with Edna’s thoughts on the meaning of being a Norwegian-American.<br /><br /><strong>This item is currently restricted.</strong>
<p><b>Bergsgaard, Edna G. (1918-2004)</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight:400;">Edna Bergsgaard</span><span style="font-weight:400;"> was born December 13th, 1918, in Spring Grove, Minnesota, to Julia and Edwin Goodno. She grew up in Iowa, just over the Minnesota border, on a farm with her grandfather, mother, and younger cousin. Edna began working at a young age, and in 1940 she married Palmer Bergsgaard, with whom she had seven children. Edna was involved in her Lutheran church and in the Sons of Norway, and when she died December 5th, 2004 she had already seen the births of many great-grandchildren.</span></p>

In this series of interviews by Odd Lovoll for his books “The Promise of America: History of the Norwegian-American People” and “The Promise Fulfilled: A Portrait of Norwegian Americans Today,” Terje Mikael Hasle Jorange interviews Donald Sherwood of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Donald tells some of the history of his maternal great-grandfather, who immigrated to Wisconsin from Norway. He also talks about his childhood and how it differed from that of his parents, some of his experiences with Norwegian traditions, and his feelings on politics and welfare. He describes his trips to Norway and involvement with the Green Bay Sons of Norway lodge, as well as his family’s roots in the Wisconsin area.<br /><br /><strong>This item is currently restricted.</strong>
<p><b>Sherwood, Donald Leroy (1933-)</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight:400;">Donald Leroy Sherwood was born on November 28th, 1933 in Gays Mills, Wisconsin, to Luke and Evelyn Anna Sherwood. He obtained a medical degree and moved to Green Bay in 1963. Donald has a wife and two sons. Now retired, he still lives in Green Bay, and is a member of the Sons of Norway.</span></p>

<p><b>Vastag, Bonnie (1942-)</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight:400;">Bonnie Vastag was born on June 20th, 1942, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, to </span><span style="font-weight:400;">Carl</span><span style="font-weight:400;"> and Flossie </span><span style="font-weight:400;">Jersvig</span><span style="font-weight:400;">. She attended Concordia College, where she graduated early in 1963 with a degree in English, a minor in Speech, and a husband. After graduating, she worked in public television and then in public relations. Later in life, Bonnie moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin, where she lives today. She is involved in the </span><span style="font-weight:400;">Green Bay Sons of Norway lodge</span><span style="font-weight:400;">, which she was president of for a time.</span></p>

Bjorn also details his many academic and economic successes in business. He explains his history with the sport of skiing, the process of adjusting to living in a new country, and his later business ventures. Bjorn also talks about his thoughts on Norwegian values and his political views.<br /><br /><strong>This item is currently restricted.</strong>
<p><b>Borgen, Bjorn Krogh “Erik” (1937-)</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight:400;">Bjorn Krogh “Erik” </span><span style="font-weight:400;">Borgen</span><span style="font-weight:400;"> was born September 22nd, 1937, in Åndalsnes, Norway, to </span><span style="font-weight:400;">Helene</span><span style="font-weight:400;"> and </span><span style="font-weight:400;">Truls</span><span style="font-weight:400;"> Borgen. He was nicknamed “Erik” by his grandmother. After World War II, his family moved to Wisconsin in 1947, where Bjorn grew up in the town of Strum. Bjorn earned a degree in </span><span style="font-weight:400;">mechanical engineering</span><span style="font-weight:400;"> from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1962, and later an MBA from Harvard in 1966. While studying at Harvard, he met his wife, </span><span style="font-weight:400;">Katherine</span><span style="font-weight:400;">, with whom he has three children. Today, Bjorn is a </span><span style="font-weight:400;">successful businessman</span><span style="font-weight:400;"> living in Colorado, where he continues his childhood hobby of skiing.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight:400;">Gene Rygh was born April 3rd, 1958, in Monroe, Wisconsin, to Ruth and Wilhelm Rygh. He attended college at Madison Area Technical College, and later in Minneapolis, and then moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he worked as a travel agent.</span></p>
